Australian tennis greats haven’t always been the best for me: Kyrgios

Kyrgios, 27, made it to his first Grand Slam final since his semi-finalist rival Spain legend Rafael Nadal withdrew from the grass-court major due to an abdominal injury.

The world number 40, whose best performance in a major prior to his Wimbledon success was to reach the 2015 Australian Open quarter-finals, also indicated that he felt like an outcast.

“As for the greats of Australian tennis, they haven’t always been the best for me personally,” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Kyrgios as saying.

“They haven’t always been supportive. They haven’t been supportive these two weeks. So it’s hard for me to read the things they say about me. It’s so sad because I don’t get support from any of them other Australian tennis players, the men’s side,” he said, adding that 2002 Wimbledon singles champion and Davis Cup captain Lleyton Hewitt was an exception.

Former Australian player and 1987 Wimbledon singles champion, Pat Cash has been critical of Kyrgios’ on-court behavior in SW19, and has called on the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) to take action against the player.

“Kyrgios has taken tennis to the lowest level I can see in terms of gambling, cheating, manipulation, abuse and aggressive behavior in front of chair umpires and line judges. Something has to be done about it. He has played some matches in the circus. and it cannot be tolerated,” Cash commented on the BBC.

Stefanos Tsitsipas accused Kyrgios of bullying and having a “bad side” at a post-match press conference after the Greeks lost their high-intensity third round match at Wimbledon.

Kyrgios accused former players of having a “sick passion” to bring him down.

“Not (current) players, but like past greats. It’s weird that they have like a sick obsession to tear me down for some reason. I don’t know what it is. But it sucks because if it’s role reversal Goes on, I would be pumped if I saw (Australian player Alex) De Minaur in the final, or if I saw Jordan Thompson or Thanasi (Kokinakis) Kyrgios.
