Bajrang Punia gets UK visa for Commonwealth Games, will go to US for training before the Games

Bajrang, who had gone to the US for training ahead of the Commonwealth Games, got his US visa earlier this month but his UK visa was awaited, due to which he could not go to the US to train.

The Sports Ministry, through the Ministry of External Affairs, got in touch with the British High Commission to obtain a UK visa for Bajrang, which has now been received. On several occasions, the Ministry of External Affairs has consistently extended support to the Sports Ministry in facilitating visas for athletes traveling abroad for competition and training ahead of the Commonwealth Games.

Along with Bajrang, wrestler Deepak Punia will also leave from India this weekend. They will train at the University of Michigan till July 30, after which both will leave for the Commonwealth Games to be held in Birmingham.

The Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) of the Sports Ministry has made the exposure trip easy.

The training stint in the United States will help prepare for the Commonwealth Games and upcoming major competitions such as the Wrestling World Championship, which is due in Belgrade in September. A total of 111 overseas performances in various sports have been funded by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports since the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, led by the CWG.
