Hashmatullah Shahidi returns to Afghanistan squad for T20I series against Ireland

Shahidi, who last played a T20I for Afghanistan against Zimbabwe in Abu Dhabi in March 2021, returned after a strong showing in the 2022 Shapeza Cricket League, scoring 259 runs in seven innings at an average of 51.80 for his team Boost Defenders .

Right-arm pacer Naveen-ul-Haq and opener Ibrahim Zadran have also been selected in the squad. Spinner Mujeeb ur Rahman has been named in the reserve along with Nijat Masood, Qais Ahmed and Usman Ghani.

According to chief selector Noor Malikzai, Mujeeb’s visa is yet to be issued and thus he has been added to the reserve players. He said that once the problem was resolved, he would be included back in the main team.

National selection committee member Mir Mubariz said he has his eyes on the Asia Cup 2022 in the UAE and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia and that the Ireland series has significant importance “in the context of our overall preparation for the mega-events” at the fore.

Afghanistan’s five-match T20I series against Ireland will be played at Stormont on 9, 11, 12, 15 and 17 August. The series will also mark the start of Jonathan Trott’s tenure as Afghanistan’s new head coach, with Graham Thorpe seriously ill.
