Rahul was named the captain of the Indian team for the T20 series in the absence of regular skipper Rohit Sharma. However, the opener withdrew from the Indian team on the eve of the first match in Delhi and Rishabh Pant has been the captain since then.
The stylish batsman was also named Rohit’s deputy for the tour of England, where India are scheduled to play three T20Is and three ODIs, apart from the only Test, the fifth and final of the extended series that began last year. The test would take place, but it had to be postponed after four matches due to the cases of Kovid in the Indian team.
As per a Cricbuzz report, there is no clarity on the timing of the proceedings for Rahul’s disappearance. He is believed to have reported at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru a few days back, but the diagnosis of his complaint is yet to be completed.
The report said that Rahul’s participation in the England series is doubtful but there is no confirmation on whether he will have to skip the white-ball game as well. The first batch of the Indian team will fly to England on Friday (June 16) and the second with coaches Rahul Dravid, Pant and Shreyas Iyer on June 20.
There is also no guarantee that the selection committee will name Rahul’s replacement as it has already announced a 17-man squad which includes three openers. Without Rahul, the team for the Test will have Rohit and Shubman Gill as openers and Mayank Agarwal will be kept in the team on demand from the team management.
