Former cricketers including Kapil Dev and Venkatesh Prasad have raised doubts over Kohli’s place in India’s T20I squad.
However, former India wicketkeeper-batsman Deep Dasgupta believes that the 33-year-old Kohli is just a good innings away from returning to his best.
Deep Dasgupta, who has played 8 Tests and 5 ODIs for India, said there was nothing wrong with Kohli’s batting and felt the former captain needed a little luck.
“A man sitting on the udder ko kutta kat liye (a man sitting on a camel can also be bitten by a dog)…Virat is going through a tough phase. Take the example of yesterday, his jerk, straight drive was just unbelievable! Whenever he is playing, it doesn’t look like he is out of form. I don’t think he played a bad shot yesterday, maybe it was his luck,” Deep Dasgupta told Jagran TV.
“In T20s you need to take risks…sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t, but Virat is batting beautifully. Though questions are being raised about his form, I believe he just needs one good innings to come back. Form. Virat is one of the best performances India has ever produced. No two ways about it.”
Earlier, Team India captain Rohit Sharma had also supported Kohli, saying that everyone goes through ups and downs and the quality of a player is not affected.
“When a player is doing well for so many years, one or two bad series doesn’t make him a bad player. We should not ignore his past performance. We who are in the team know the importance of the player. I have every right to talk about it but it doesn’t mean much to us.”
