Practice match, Day 1: KS India take India to 246/8 at stumps against Leicestershire

Bharat ensured that India did not lose momentum despite Virat Kohli’s one-set wicket of 33 runs. He found support from Umesh Yadav (23) and Mohammed Shami (18 not out) in stands of 66 and 32, and ended the day unbeaten during rain. Forced to finish early.

The reserve wicket-keeper led India’s recovery after losing his first five for 82. Bharat, along with Kohli, put India on 57, but the partnership ended after Roman Walker dismissed the former Indian captain lbw. The 21-year-old pacer then dismissed Shardul Thakur to complete five wickets (5 for 24) and trouble India on a difficult surface.

Earlier, India had found a way to give almost all of their players play-time in the only practice match available to them, with four playing for Leicestershire.

However, India’s top-order failed to deliver as the top five batsmen were back on the board with just 85. Rohit Sharma, Hanuma Vihari and Ravindra Jadeja fell on the walker.

Rohit (25) was once again out on the hook, while Shubman Gill, who started but was dismissed for 21, and Iyer, who faced a first-ball duck, played away from his body to the side.

Kohli’s outside edge looked suspicious before being beaten on the inside edge, and Hanuma Vihari was trapped and did not look like he had any scoring options. Jadeja, on the other hand, was caught at the crease by an inswinger, who was trapped right in front.

Brief scores: Indians 246 for 8 (India 70 not out, Kohli 33, Walker 5-24, Davis 2-64) vs Leicestershire
