Rothesay International Eastbourne: Kvitova, Georgi reach semi-finals

Two-time Wimbledon champion 14th seed Kvitova defeated last remaining Brit Harriet Dart 6-3, 6-4 in 1 hour and 25 minutes.

Earlier, Italy’s 12th seed Giorgi won the first quarterfinal of the day, beating Bulgaria’s lucky loser Viktoria Tomova 6-2, 6-1 in just an hour.

In their first meeting, Kvitova was a force to be reckoned with behind her delivery. The Czech, who won her two Wimbledon titles in 2011 and 2014, hit eight aces and never broke. Kvitova suffered just one break point, which came in the last game of the match.

“I always try to serve well; sometimes it takes more work, sometimes it doesn’t,” Kvitova said.

“I didn’t have a weak game today so it was definitely good, especially at the end of the match when it’s always hard to turn it off.”

Making her seventh appearance at Eastbourne, Kvitova reached the Rothesay International semi-finals for the second time in her career. She lost to Marion Bartoli in the 2011 Eastbourne final, only weeks before Kvitova claimed her breakthrough at Wimbledon.

World number 128 Tomova entered the main draw after Ones Jaburu pulled out of the singles, and made the most of it. The Bulgarian won back-to-back Tour-level matches for the first time this year, defeating Kirsten Flipkens to reach her first WTA 500 quarterfinal. Flipkens had defeated Tomova in qualifying a few days back.

But the Bulgarian’s run was swiftly stopped by World No 26 Giorgi, who was taking the lead during their first meeting. Giorgi hit five aces, won 82 percent behind his first serve, and returned to Tomova’s second serve to claim two-thirds of the points.

With the win, Giorgi matched his Eastbourne semi-final result from last year, and is one victory away from his first visit to the Rothesay International final. The Italian has three singles titles on her resume, and her first career title came on the grass at ‘s-Hertogenbosch’ in 2015.
