Anand finished third with 14.5 points from world champion Magnus Carlsen (16.5 points) and Azerbaijan’s Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (15.5 points). In the final round, Carlsen outperformed Bulgaria’s Veselin Topalov in the tiebreaker game, while Mamedyarov was held to a draw by Timur Rajabov as he emerged the winner in the tiebreak as Mamedyarov could not cross the one point gap before the final round. .

Mamedyarov had a chance to win the title outright by winning the match against Radzabov. Carlsen won the Norwegian chess title for the fifth time in 10 years. In the final round on Friday, Anand played 22-moves against Aryan Tari, where the result of the match was a draw.

He then made a brilliant defense in the Armageddon game, winning the match by a 1.5–1 margin as players get three points for a mini-match win and one point each for a draw in a classical game. However, it was a stellar performance for the Indian chess maestro as he won seven of his nine mini-matches, including a memorable victory against Carlsen in the fifth round.
