Presidential Election 2022: The opposition can field a common candidate for the Presidential Election 2022 to be held on July 18 and talks have started regarding this. Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge has contacted the leaders of some opposition parties and their opinion is to be known regarding the common candidate. Kharge said that today the schedule for the presidential election has been released. In such a situation, it is possible that like-minded parties may field a common candidate. I have met Sharad Pawar today. Sonia Gandhi told me that I should meet leaders of Sharad Pawar, Shiv Sena, TMC. He said that Sharad Pawar is ready. I will talk to Uddhav Thackeray, DMK, TMC, SP. Everyone will sit at one place and talk about the candidate.

I told him that the CPI would support any common candidate who is secular and has a progressive outlook. He replied that Sonia Gandhi ji and the Congress party also have the same stand.” A senior opposition leader said, “Discussions have started between the opposition parties regarding the presidential election. Once the consensus is reached, a common candidate can be fielded.

If we look at the figures, the BJP’s NDA has a huge edge in the presidential election. The NDA has about 5,35,000 votes out of a total of 10,86,431. The NDA candidate may also get support from some parties like AIADMK, Biju Janata Dal and YSR Congress Party. The United Progressive Alliance (UPA) has more than 1.5 lakh votes of MPs and around this number it will also get votes of MLAs. In some of the past elections also, the opposition candidate has been getting a little over three lakh votes. There will be 4,809 electors in the upcoming election, out of which 776 will be MPs and 4,033 will be MLAs. These include 223 Rajya Sabha members and 543 members of the Lok Sabha.
