The Vampire Diaries is an American mystic teen drama series. It was developed by Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec based on the book series of the same name written by LJ Smith. The series premiered on The CW on September 10, 2009, and ended on March 10, 2017, airing 171 episodes over eight seasons.
The pilot episode attracted the most viewers for any series premiere since the network was founded in 2006. The first season crossed 3.60 million viewers. It became the network’s most-watched series before being replaced by Arrow. The show received several nominations, winning four People’s Choice Awards and several Teen Choice Awards. Lead actress Nina Dobrev, who played Elena Gilbert, confirmed in April 2015 that she would be leaving the show after its sixth season. Dobrev returned to record voiceovers for the seventh season finale, and guest starred in the series finale. The CW renewed the series for an eighth season in March 2016, but in July of that year, it was announced that the eighth season would be the show’s last. The final season began airing on October 21, 2016 and ended on March 10, 2017.
