Ruchira Kamboj appointed as the next Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations

Senior diplomat Ruchira Kamboj, presently Indian Ambassador to Bhutan, has been appointed as the next Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations in New York.

  • Senior diplomat Ruchira Kamboj, presently Indian Ambassador to Bhutan, has been appointed as the next Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations in New York.

  • She will replace TS Tirumurti as the Indian Ambassador to the United Nations. The Ministry of External Affairs revealed that Ruchira Kamboj is expected to take charge soon.

  • Ruchira joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1987 and was an all-India female topper of the 1987 Civil Services batch. She was also the topper of the 1987 Foreign Service batch.

  • Ruchira began her diplomatic journey in Paris, where she was posted as the third secretary at the Indian Embassy in France from 1989–91 and learned French there.

  • Ruchira has been India’s Permanent Representative to UNESCO in Paris, Head of Protocol in New Delhi and Indian High Commissioner to South Africa.

  • From 2011–2014, Ruchira was India’s chief of protocol, the first and only woman diplomat ever in the Indian government to hold the position.

Filmmaker Srijit Mukherji has released the trailer of Shabaash Mithu, a biopic on former Indian women’s cricket team captain Mithali Raj.

  • The trailer gives a glimpse into the inspirational life of Mithali, the highest run-scorer in international women’s cricket and an inspiration to many budding women cricketers in India.

  • The trailer traces Mithali’s journey as a cricketer and as a female player fighting for equality in a male-dominated sport.

India’s first ‘Balika Panchayat’ formed in 5 villages of Gujarat

India’s first ‘Balika Panchayat’ has started in 5 villages of Kutch district of Gujarat.

Main characteristics:

  • The initiative seeks to promote the political and social development of girls and affirm their active participation in politics.

  • Panchayats have started in Kunaria, Motagua, Maska and Vadsar villages of Kutch district.

  • This initiative was taken by the Women and Child Development Welfare Department, Government of Gujarat under the ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ campaign.

  • The Ministry of Women and Child Development is planning to start Balika Panchayat across the country.

The Balika Panchayat is managed by people in the age group of 11-21. Its objective is to promote the political and social development of the girl child and to remove the evils like child marriage and dowry system from the society. The primary objective of Panchayat is that girls should move forward in politics. In the Balika Panchayat, the member is nominated as in the Gram Panchayat.
