trance movie story review and update?
Anwar Rasheed-Fahd Faasil team’s ‘Trance’ was one of the films that the audience was waiting for a long time.  After ‘Bangalore Daisies’, Fahad-Nasriya star duo is reuniting and Anwar Rasheed is returning to the directorial field after a while.  At the end of the wait, ‘Trance’ has hit the theaters today.

The theme of the film, Fahadh’s unparalleled acting skills and technical excellence all make ‘Trancy’ a great viewing experience.  Viju Prasad (Fahad Fazil) is a motivational speaker.  Viju lives with his brother Kunjan (Srinath Bhasi) in a house with windows facing the sea in Kanyakumari.  They are the children of a mother who committed suicide because she couldn’t bear the debts and hardships of life.  Viju’s life is for his brother, whose youth was thrown into disarray by orphanhood and the death of his mother.  Viju’s journey goes into deep depression when his brother also commits suicide following his mother’s path.

But he was not ready to give up.  Viju is moving to Mumbai after leaving Kanyakumari.  Some corporate powers he meets there recognize the talent of a motivational speaker in Viju and hire him for ‘another venture’.  After six months of training, a young man named Viju Prasad is turning into a faith healer named Pastor Joshua Carlton.

Joshua Carlton, who heals diseases through prayer, has won crores of believers in India and abroad in a short period of time.  Along with his growth, he also faces some difficulties.  One of them is an attempt by a journalist (Soubin Shahir) to dismantle the religion-based business of Joshua and the corporate mafia behind him.  The story of ‘Trancy’ develops through the subsequent developments.

‘Trancy’ can be described as 100% a Fahadh Faasil show.  From the first frame to the last frame, Fahadh is full of the film.  Fahad is able to deal with the trauma and depression caused by a broken childhood and the death of loved ones with aplomb.  Fahad also portrays the growth from Vijuana Prarabkara to Joshua Carlton with aplomb.  Fahad’s character goes through many situations like isolation, depression, guilt and delusions.

Nazriya’s character Esther Lopez is also garnering attention, though she has relatively less screen space compared to Fahadh.  Esther in ‘Trancy’ is different from all the characters Nazriya has done so far.  Gautham Vasudev Menon, Chemban Vinod, Dileesh Pothan, Soubin Shahir, Srinath Bhasi, Arjun Ashokan, Jinu Joseph, Srinta, Ashwathi and Vinayakan are in the cast of the film.  Another thing worth mentioning is the performance of Dileesh Pothan and Vinayakan.

The bhakti industry, which turns religion into a profit-making tool that can be as mesmerizing as alcohol or drugs, is a subject that many are afraid to touch.  Director Anwar Rasheed, who boldly approached such a theme, deserves applause.  ‘Trance’ is a knife that has penetrated the bhakti industry that has spread like a banyan tree.  The film’s story is written by Vincent Vadakan.

Amal Neerad’s cinematography and Rasul Pookutty’s sound design set a different mood for the film.  Thrilling music by Jackson Vijayan-Sushin Shyam team is also a highlight of the film.

While the theme, acting and technique are all excellent, there is one factor that affects the enjoyment and that is the duration of the ‘trance’.  Stretching and stretching is felt in many places.  Neither was the seemingly unnecessary styling given to the characters and the film’s treatment.

‘Trance’ may sometimes disappoint those who are expecting a complete entertainer.  But with the timely story, Fahadh’s brilliant performance, excellent making and bold approach, ‘Trance’ will surely take a place in the history of Malayalam cinema.

How the film will be received in a state like Kerala, where the bhakti industry has deep roots, and how a bigoted society will react to the film will have to be seen in the coming days.
